Sneaker Galaxy "Le Femme Sole" Interview

Since I'm getting excited for my upcoming trip to NYC for the Sneaker Galaxy show (May 1st!), I thought I'd do a little interview with the 2 ladies who are bringing it to us: La Don, "Fashion Revolutionaire", and Ayanna Ginns, "Professional Dreamer", both founders of Le Femme Sole.

Why start in New York? Why end in Miami?

Well New York is where Hip Hop and the street culture
thrives. It is also where we both built our foundation
as young artists and professionals. To build anything
long lasting the foundation has to be strong. So we decided
to make our foundation in the concrete jungle!
As for Miami, I always said I would bring back nothing
but funk to south florida. I’m ready to return back home
with the best event south florida has yet to see......
What are you most excited to find in this new
"Sneaker Galaxy"?
We are excited to find true art from artists
who are hungry andinspired by life.

When did you start loving kicks? Can you remember
your "first love"?
La Don: My addiction started when I was 6. My dad owned
a sneaker store and always came home with dope kicks. I
did not fall in love with kicks until the Ken Griffeys.
Ayanna: My addiction started when the Huaraches came out.
My big Bro had a size 8 and I was a 4,so I would stuff
the toe with paper so I can wear them. I fell in love with
the Bo Jacksons as well.
There are sneaker parties everywhere you look. What makes
the Sneaker Galaxy something not to miss??
Sneaker Galaxy is a charity art exhibit. This particular
tour is about the culture that made rocking a fresh pair
of kicks meaningful. It’s about bringing back these elements
that are lost today and helping our community. We love
those sneaker parties; they're a lot of fun! Sneaker
Galaxy is actually inspired from all of those events. But
for us to be something different and give everyone something
new,we can't compare ourselves to something that already
exists.
Anything else you want female sneaker fiends to know?
We hope to bring something refreshing and new to this culture
and at the same time stay true. Change is something that's
always colorful and without you ladies, our voice wouldn't be
as loud.

P.S. Yes, you will be able to buy FSF t-shirts at the event!

My Footlocker Hookup (biting off Roc)

So in the footsteps of fellow blogger extraordinare, ROC lol, I decided to post my kicks as well. Shoutout to Melissa at Footlocker and Lori of course for the great hookup!!!

So what did I get you ask??

Most of the FSF crew knows I'm crazy about PONY! I love em! and they are SUPER COMFORTABLE and stylish to me. So what better request than to get the PONY Uptowns!! Not just any uptowns...the PONY Uptown Darryl Dawkins!!

Darryl Dawkins also known as Chocolate Thunder was a monster dunker back in the ’70s and was remembered by most for shattering the glass of the back board. While breaking the glass he wore the Pony Uptown.

I know its not a female inspired shoe...and I'm not a big b-ball fan (sorry Lori) (I'm a baseball freak GO METS!)But its still heat to me!!!

Funny story while rocking them...I was at an Art store buying some stuff and a dude stopped me and was grillin my kicks. He stopped me and asked

"WHAT KIND OF KICKS ARE THOSE?"

WHAT???!!!???!!!???

I said dude these are PONY. He was like What are those?

WHAT???!!!???!!!???
WHAT???!!!???!!!???
WHAT???!!!???!!!???

I was in astonishment! I then went on to explain about them...I really couldn't believe he didn't know. Just another day in the life of a FSFer...educating the people on trueness... not hype!

Footlocker Hook-up

So last week my Footlocker hook-up kicks came through. As i tore through the box i was praying they were the Be true Multicolored.

They weren't but i still got some heat. I got some Blazers, a shoe i had been thinking about purchasing already. Man they are so retro. Now to find a shirt that matches.....

Thanks Lori and Footlocker!!

Living the Dream, Sneaker Design School

Drawings, mock-ups and mood boards- my life is fully full of them as well as my bedroom floor, days and weeks are merging into one, I'm living in a sketchbook!
Days have been spent refining the Final Designs for my range and trying to work out the best colourways and prints. Luckily, with a little help from Photoshop, I've found a way to speed up this part. When it comes to the final CAD drawings I've been making promises of free trainers in exchange for help to get everything as professionally finished as possible- it's fine to outsource workers, I hope...
Then there's yet another mock-up to be made (just completed the 4th one for each design now), adjusting the details of how one panel sits with another, changing my mind on having a raw-edge here, a folded one there. And then theres adding all those fine details so it all comes together apparently effortlessly.
I've also had to pitch my idea of how the exhibition set-up will look and how I'm going to sell myself. Without giving too much away the themes of 'something for the ladies' and 'sex sells' are the main inspirations...
ARHHHH 3 weeks left, I have a list as long as my leg and I'm crapping my panties!

Seychelles

I found a different brand to blog about today, Seychelles. They also offer boots and pumps. Read below for more info or check out karmaloop for purchases.

"Seychelles started on the beaches of Venice, California in 1984. In 1999, a new Seychelles team was formed. In search of a deeper meaning, we questioned everything, including "does anyone really need another shoe brand?" We saw that there was a significant shift in the way girls thought, acted and lived. The way they dressed reflected this new way of life. Vintage and boutique shopping was taking off. Girls with incredible personal style were void of a special shoe brand in the market; a brand that was unique and ahead of fashion. To describe this phenomena we coined the phrase "The Independent Edge"; embodying the spirit that girls can be anything they want to be - and they can do it on their own terms. Our mission statement... "To personify the Independent Edge while fulfilling your desires beyond what you dream and expect."

The styles of their shoes feature trendy names like; Bad Mama Jama, Always a lady and Dont' Waste my Time.

retro ad--British Knights from the 80s...

A reader just sent me this... I probably hated these at the time, but they'd sure be fun to find on ebay right now!
her blog is http://daggerdebs.blogspot.com.

Heart and Sole Party rocked Miami

FSF's Florida chapter put on their first event, and it was no joke! Besides having over 200 guests, FSF repped with more heat on the ladies' feet than any time in recent memory, plus a great slate of female DJs, performers and graf artists. Way to go FSF SoFlo, and many thanks to Charissa of Hi-top Studio for pulling it all together.

Crowd at the Sneaker Battle (thanks 305)

Shari, Lala and Marta holding it down at the FSF table

Charissa, Chef and Jen greeting the guests, but somehow I missed a pic of Yarelis with the bat. Well, maybe it's better that way...

mixing and matching with Nike and Footlocker

Yup, Nike keeps mixing and matching tops and bottoms. Here's Jillian rocking them one way at the Heart & Sole Party in Miami...
And here's the style again in a limited Footlocker release that they're calling "Tuned Air" and I'm calling Hot Air =) (out right now)

The floating swoosh is never my style, but I know some folks will rock these well. Smallest size is a 7.5 men's.

Throwback Video- Salt-n-Pepa Push it

After my rant I needed to hear some uplifting music lol Enjoy!!

Must we be so Uppity!!!

I have always admired the sneaker and streetwear culture as a whole. Now that I'm actually having more networking experience in the culture, it amazes me how snobby people are when it comes to sneakers and streetwear. I mean what are we really being uppity over--some sneakers and tees?!? Some of these people at these boutiques wanna stare you up and down and look at you like why are you in here and really why I'm there is to buy some sneakers duh!!! Then you have these people who work or own these shops complain about how hype the whole culture is getting and claiming to be real when their shop is located in the land of hype (Soho and L.E.S.) Who are you fooling? You're feeding into it, and you know exactly what you're doing. The way some of these people come off it's like being at a country club. If you don't have the latest SB or you didn't spend 100 and up on a pair of kicks or didn't buy the most exclusive hoodie you ain't nothing. I thought this whole industry was about wearing what you feel and having fun with it. If I wanted to be judged, I would have entered myself in a beauty pageant!! Cause while you're sitting there and judging people and telling people what they should be wearing, Footlocker, Finish Line and major athletic stores are taking your money. Here is a suggestion for all the people who own and work at these exclusive boutiques: take the stick out and relax!!!

See buying sneakers really does pay off!!

Always buying sneakers? It's the sign of a leader: poll

Tue Apr 1, 9:50 AM ET

Got a passion for buying sneakers? It could be a good sign, with a poll finding that people who buy three pairs of sneakers or more a year are far more likely to be a leadership type than other people.

Mindset Media, a media company that examines personality traits of different consumers, found that people who buy more than three pairs of sneakers a year are 61 percent more likely to have the qualities of a modern leader.

These qualities were defined as having ideas and vision, and a style with others that is both inclusive and decisive.

The survey of 7,500 people, using market research group Nielsen's online panel, found multi-sneaker buyers were 50 percent more likely to be very assertive and 47 percent more likely to be spontaneous.

Lauren Arvonio, a spokeswoman for Mindset Media, said sneaker buyers were more likely to fly by the seat of their pants.

"It is often said you can tell a lot about a person by the shoes they wear, and now we have some hard data to back that up," Arvonio told Reuters.

"What is interesting is that these personality traits held true across the board, regardless of age, income, or gender."

Previous Mindset Media surveys found that people who pay their credit card bills off each month were more likely to be "highly deliberate," thinking through their actions, but also less modest than others, likely to brag about their habits.

Hybrid car owners were found to be 78 percent more likely to be highly creative than other people and less dogmatic.

April FSF contest up!

Yes, I know it's a bit late, does that make you MAD? Or just EXCITED to win kicks? Well, either way, you're on the right track, cuz this is all about the emotions we feel for our beloved kicks. Maybe John Maeda did have it right, calling this exclusive collaboration the "Emoretion", cuz we do get kind of, yes, over-emotional about our babies, don't we?

So here's the challenge:

Think about your sneakers. Think about how you get angry if someone steps on one. How you get anxious when you're waiting to see if you won on ebay. How you get all excited when the UPS guy delivers a brand spanking new pair of your heart's desire. How you get jealous when you see that other kid snatch up your size when you finally get to the front of the all-night line. How you get passionate about the differences between deadstock and retro. We do have a lot of emotion around these material objects, don't we? So tell us how you're "emoretional" about your kicks, and you could win...

And here's the prize:

Your very own pair of the Maeda x Rbk collaboration, which is SOLD OUT, we might add... We have 2 pairs for 2 lucky winners, a size 7 women's and a size 9 women's. (Sorry for the limited selection, but limited release means limited... =)

To learn more about the contest, click here.

Here's a fun lil example, in case you wonder how I feel about my kicks...

ProMama Winners!

Hey all, sorry for my delay in posting our March ProMama contest winners! I had to get back from the Final Four (go Lady Vols!) and Heart and Sole Party in Miami (go Florida FSF chapter!) We had many great entrants, and honored women from female pilots Bessie Coleman and Amelia Earhart, to singers MIA and Missy, artists Lady Pink and Matsushita Michiko, and some amazing moms and aunts. But at last, after sorting through wonderful art and some serious women's history lessons (go Elizabeth Stanton!), here are our top 3 picks. Thanks to all the entrants and to our judges, Mama and Kristen Wise from adidas. And thanks to Mama and adidas for the ProMama prizes!

From Kehinda Oshodi, recognizing Lisa Leslie. (Sorry for the change in format, I had trouble making it a jpg...)

[click on the images to make them larger]

From Angelina McClure, honoring Hatshepsut:

And from Asha Fields, recognizing Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf:

Being the first female president is tangible because one woman has accomplished the task. In 2006, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf made history as Africa's first female president! Until 2012, she holds office in Liberia, her homeland. Founded by freed American slaves in 1847, Liberia is the oldest of Africa's republics and a war-ridden country.

In 1980, Liberia experienced a coup, or violent overthrow of the government, by Master Sgt. Samuel Doe, who sent Sirleaf, who was then finance minister, into exile. Sirleaf reemerged and ran for president three times - in 1997, 2003,and 2006. The third time was the charm.

Sirleaf has promised to "discharge the duties and functions of the office of the president of the Republic of Liberia to the best of her abilities". "Stomping out corruption" is her top priority. Her approach earned her the nickname "Iron Lady", and that name is perfect for the adidas next shoe line. It's aggressive. And to think, when I feel powerful and fashionable as Commander in Chief , I will wear my Iron Lady's.

Congrats winners! Contact me soon so we can get your ProMamas to you.

Another ILL Party!!!

Long time... Sneaker Design School

..and not much work. Following a bout of the flu, a birthday party to rave it up to and some Freelance work (which if my tutor reads this didn't happen because that would be a distract that I'm not meant to be dabbling with), I'm finally getting back on the bicycle and DOING SOMETHING!

Once again the actions of my kind colleagues and supervisor at work have seen that I get another insiders advantage- I was allowed the freedom of the carefully monitored stockroom with camera in tow. What good is this? Many photographs of different types of boxes and special bits'n'pieces of packaging that I don't already own. Why would you want to photograph this? Because it shows what companies have already done towards trying to make that purchase just a little bit more special for you. Ever bought a pair for sneaks just for the box? Well maybe not, but it is a nice extra and also easier to tell whats in which box when all those generic Nike boxes are stacked sky high in your room. Any one else feel me on this point?

Everything from how the product will be marketed, to how it will be packaged are important areas to consider when aiming for a higher mark, so I'm proposing to have my own shoe boxes printed and made-up.
Yep, I'm becoming a bit of a butt-suck, but ass does tastes mighty fine!

Saturday Finale!

So after all of that A-Money and I head towards Chinatown and go to a Vietnamese Spot that I was a lil skeptical on but after much reassurance from A-Money, I was good! So after a long a very tiring day full of kicks and networking it was time for bed! Thas the life of an FSFer!

Check ya on the flipside!

and remember...

DON'T SLEEP ON THE LADIES!!!!!!!

A Busy Saturday [Part Four]

I told you it was a busy Saturday! And by this time its only like 4PM! So I wonder off towards the Bowery and go to WORLD NYC [worldstorenyc.com] at 187 Chrystie Street. My man Dallas is in there holding down the spot. I met Dallas at a Takeover Theory Party like ages ago, and we connected but I never went down to his store. So what great opportunity than today I thought. He remembered me right away and I was flattered!

If you haven't been down to WORLD, its a dope spot. It's not your average "graffiti-inspired" Street wear Shop. You come in and see wood planked floors and atlases plastered all over the wall with props of the captain's ship essence and you're like whats is this? You wouldn't think you could buy kicks and dope t-shirts and fitted hats in this spot. But thats the beauty folks! Out-The Box kinda shopping experience!

Some of the Clothes and kicks in the shop.

Chillin up in the Spot with my Irish Green Mets Jacket and my Green/Wht/Silver AM95's!

We kicked it for awhile about clothes and kicks and where the trends are moving in the future. Eventually A-Money met me up there and she got a taste of the WORLD experience! She checked out some heat and loved the store! They carry a lot of international brands so you can cop stuff not even seen here in NY or any other spot in the states!

So after talking his ears off for hours lol and enjoying my stay there it was time to "Jump Ship" which is a great saying considering the theme of the store! Hop on down to WORLD and tell em I sent ya mate!

Dallas Givin FSF much Love! Even let me put Flyers in the Spot!

Thanks Dallas! We'll see you soon!
