#PLEASEJUSTDOIT: PURPLE UNICORN PLANET'S CAMPAIGN FOR SMALL SIZES

Are you a Female Sneaker Fiend that wears a size 6 or smaller, saw a dope pair of sneakers that you wanted but was unable to get them because they're only made in men's sizes?  I know this plight, and so does Emily Hodgson and Emilie Riis.

After writing letters to Nike and getting disappointing answers, Emily & Emilie teamed up to create Purple Unicorn Planet.  A fantasy online boutique featuring sneakers we'd love to own but are only available in men's sizes.

I caught up with the ladies to find out how they became sneaker fiends and how Purple Unicorn Planet came about.

Please introduce yourselves
Emilie Riis:   27 years old. My passport is Danish but I've been living in London since I moved over to study. I have always worked in advertising and currently work at 18 Feet & Rising as a Strategist.   I have been looking for that perfect pair of trainers and my search took me to Miami (the capital of cool trainers). Needless to say I returned empty handed. Talking to friends, searching online I realized that I wasn't alone on my quest and joined forces with Emily. We see a gap in the market, and we want to close it. It’s a very simple question – why are all women’s trainers always so bland? – with a very simple solution – make the cool men’s trainers in our sizes. If we succeed with this, and Nike changes it up, we would be really happy and excited about the fact that we, and all the people who support our mission, helped bring cool trainers to the girls.
Emily Hodgson:   I'm a 25 year old Creative Producer from London born and bread.  I work at 18 Feet & Rising in integrated advertising. Still can’t drive.  What a great time to be young – with the internet at your disposal.  I feel infiltrated with data overload, and constantly feel like I've had a hunch or had a feeling about something – and not acted on it.  From talking with Emilie, we worked out we had similar frustrations with fashion - why could we not buy the trainers we wanted to in our sizes?  Fed up of sitting back and watching things play out, you can talk something to death, but actually making it and getting it out there was important to me. And it doesn't hurt that its about fashion…

1. How did you become sneaker fiends?
Working in advertising you often run in and out of offices, back and forth between meetings and there is no point in making it harder for yourself by wearing 12 inch heels. Sneakers are the perfect footwear for a day in and out of the office as you are comfortable but keeping it fashion and on trend. Working in the creative industries we are both instinctively drawn to good design. Nike has a lot of well designed shoes. For men.

2. What brands are you into?
Of sports retailer brands, Nike has been a favorite of ours for a while.  We also like the high-street brand Cos, and was also very excited about And Other Stories when they opened.  Of more high-end brands, Stella McCartney always manages to high-end luxe with a London/sports edge.  And the French brand A.P.C is doing some really nice pieces for women too – clothes and sneakers.

3. When Purchasing a sneaker, what do you look for?
Colourways and trainers style. We are all about the darker colourways and mixing patterns and textures in new and inventive ways.  Not just pink and purple.  We love all the sneakers of PUP – we’re particularly keen on the city pack… only available to men.

4. What are some advantages in being a female sneaker fiend?
Hmm. Sadly at the moment there are probably more drawbacks than advantages.  But that is something we are trying to change with PUP.

5. What are some disadvantages being a female sneaker fiend?
We don’t have enough cool sneakers. The sneaker market caters to the guys and spend less time making nice stuff for us girls. It’s quite frustrating that all the sneakers we like don’t come in our size, and never will. It’s a boys club, which we hope will open up soon.

6. What/when was the final straw that led you to start Purple Planet Unicorn?
We went to a trainer release in an underground Nike shop in London. It said that the shoes would be released in women’s sizes but after queuing for an hour we found out that the shoes only went down to a UK size 5.5.  We were so disappointed, and by that time we had already started talking about doing something big, but this was the weekend we decided to actually go ahead with it.

 7. What kind of reaction have you received since starting the site?
Empathy and support. We have received personal email from women supporting out cause and cheering us on. They are offering their support in any way they can, from spreading our message on their blogs to putting us on radio shows.  It has been great to see how we girls can get together and support each other, even if it’s just to get some cooler trainers in our sizes.  Maybe this can teach us to stand together more in general.

 8. Other than the obvious of Nike making smaller sizes, are there any other sneaker related issues you'd like to tackle?
No, we think that is our main goal and where we want to focus on generating a change.

10. For people that would like to follow you personally, are you on any social media?  If so what are your names?
We are both on Twitter!  @EmilieRiis @emilyjh13

11. Any parting words for the readers?
Keeping on supporting Purple Unicorn Planet with the #PLEASEJUSTDOIT campaign.  Send it to your friends, family or even local radio stations!  We can only change the status quo if we stand together and show Nike how big our voice is.

There you have it folks!  Emily and Emilie are on a mission that I understand and totally support.  In question 3, they also highlight another issue most Female Sneaker Fiend's have that we at fsf coined "shrink & pink".

Be sure to tell a Friend to tell a friend.  Repost and don't forget to use the hashtag #PLEASEJUSTDOIT. You can also follow the Purple Unicorn Planet movement via twitter @PUnicornP.

Do Better than Shrink & Pink!

Interruptmag is doing real-world hacking too! These girls are serious. Check out this wheat paste job! Hey team, where is it? Can we put it up on Nike's campus?! HA!

Why Female Sneaker Fiend?

Those of you who keep an eye on FSF know that I haven't been at the top of my game lately--sneakers or otherwise. I apologize for that! Yes, the forums are down and driving us batty, but there's no stopping YOU all, out there doing your thing, holding it down for the females and killing it with the freshest of the Spring kicks. This video is about YOU.

Someone else who IS on the top of her game is Cameron Russell, taking on all the sexism in the media and shining a light on a number of cooooool females rocking their own media like we do. Here's a little piece she did on FSF, but don't miss her whole steez at interruptmag.com.

HTM Flyknit drop #3

This July, Nike releases its third installment of the HTM Flyknit collection. HTM, the ongoing collaboration between style leader and Fragment Design Founder Hiroshi Fujiwara, Nike design legend Tinker Hatfield and Nike Inc. CEO and designer Mark Parker, celebrates the groundbreaking performance attributes of a new technology that changes the way footwear is constructed.

Since 2002, these three designers have worked together to amplify new innovations, reinterpret existing designs, and explore concepts that take the brand to new places.

Pushing the boundaries of Nike Flyknit technology by showcasing the aesthetic possibilities of fabrics, colors and patterns, this third collection features a refreshed series of color ways.  Releasing as a collection of six unique color ways, the HTM Trainer+ is woven into four classic solids, Black, Blue, Volt, and bold Red, embellished with the swoosh mark on the back heel.  Two additional styles from the collection feature a multi-colored upper that is the result of the yarns from the classic solids coming together through multiple weave variations.  This approach allows for varying hues to combine into an intricate variation of textured patterns producing a bold heathered upper that exhibits the precision and complexity of knit technology. Made complete with Nike’s signature Lunarlon cushioning system, the HTM Trainer+ is finished with a sleek white Lunarlon sole that ties the collection together.

Launching first on July 26th at Nike’s 1948 location in London, the third release of the HTM Flyknit Collection in all six color ways will be available in limited quantities at select Nike retail locations globally. Please visit www.nikestadiums.com for more information on specific release dates (late August here in the US).

BAITxAsics Ring Pack

At a time when the world comes together to support their country in the Olympics, Asics and BAIT team up for an exclusive, eye-catching celebration of the world’s ultimate athletic exhibition. The Asics x BAIT Ring Pack introduces a limited collection of five unique shoes inspired by the Olympic Games’ world-famous ring logo. Each individual shoe is inspired by one of the five rings; the collection as a whole only employs the colors of the logo plus the basic white and grey for good measure. The pack takes Asics’ classic runners and sews in innovative designs and materials, resulting in a set of sneakers unlike anything that Asics has offered. The five shoes are woven together by common use of two features: the reflective 3M accents and the metallic, gold medal-themed insole. The pack is designed for the true sneaker fan with the highest quality materials and fresh new styles.

The first two shoes that will drop by the end of this week are the “Blue Ring” and the “Yellow Ring.”
*The Olympic Rings Pack is available for sale on July 26th 9PM PST (12AM EST) only at BAITme.com. This is your only chance to guarantee all 5 colors of the Olympic Rings Pack, as we have set aside a limited number of this pre-pack for the launch. I would like to Introduce Chicago's own Forever Fly Crew

I came across this brand on twitter and it immediately had my attention for a few reasons. One of the being that they are from Chicago <3, two they represent for the females and three..Well the name of the brand speaks for it self....They are Forever Fly. I asked them to if they would like to do an interview with us and they were more than happy to support FSF. So with that being said here is out Q&A with the Forever Fly Crew....

Whats up!!! Let's just get right down to business....

-Where is forever fly based?

We're based in Chicago, the city we all were born and raised in...

-See that's one of the reasons I like ya'll.. Chicagoan till Chicago win!

-When did the crew come up with idea and how did the start up come about?

Forever Fly was launched in March of 2010. When it came to choosing a name
we needed something that would be simple, catchy, easy to remember but the most important
thing was to find something that would reflect our brand. The crew came about after forever fly was started. At first we were just four guys working on a brand. But we discovered that our story was just as unique as our brand. That's when we decided to display our image rather than only clothing.

-Okay okay, I like that! The brand and what it does for unity is more important than the clothing it is represented on...I can dig it!

-What do you want for your brand?

The main thing we want is to show is anything is possible. It's crazy that young men from the west side of Chicago can build a business from the ground up and in return do things to better the community around us. We try to make classic clothing opposed to focusing on whats trendy. We sell most of our clothing through meet ups because we feel it works for us. That personal connection with every customer is everything to us and we really do enjoy meeting the people that make us who we are. Every person that makes a purchase with us is buying their way into our crew and they represent us every time they wear it.

-Why should female sneaker fiends rock your brand VS other female clothing lines?

We never intended on starting a separate line for women, it was something that built itself
Since our launch, we always received custom orders from our women customers. With no prior
experience in designing for women, I needed help from the Forever Fly ladies to make
something that they would like. That's when we decided to reach out for opinions through our social
network pages. So in reality, the women's line was really created by the people who support it.
We want our female fans to support all small businesses but they should rock Forever Fly more because we're  DOPE and they're not.

-I know that it wasn't intentional to produce to a line for females but what changed your mind?
A lot people in our fan base are female and we wanted to do something to cater to them. We didn't want to leave anyone out. We even started a campaign #NoChildLeftUnFly for the kids that wanna be Forever Fly.

-This I love a brand made for women by women!! I love that! And the confidence!! ahaha

There you have ladies! Hit them up on Facebook or twitter! Or on these right here interwebs at:
