Sneaker Design School, An Occupational Hazard
One of the pleasures of research was a store visit that lasted three days, made by chance, to the legendary Sports and Things, as featured way back in Sneaker Freaker.
As I stepped off the bus I was horrified at the sight of CLOSING DOWN SALE, I even broke out into hot sweats like a post-menopausal lady. What met me the other side of the door was a sight for saw eyes. There were piles of trainers on tables, boxes scattered about the place and more rails of discount mis-fit clothing than a charity shop.
I pulled my jaw off the floor and made a move towards the store manager.
The manager, big up your chest sir, claims to have the Holy Grail of basketball trainers- he even had the pictures of them on his phone! Seriously guys, sexism for being a femalesneakerfiend? That’s bull, if anything it’s surprisingly easy to bond over leather, laces and gum soles. I had a personal shopping experience with a guided tour of the 3 HUGE stock rooms.

I bought more than I could carry, had to go back the next day and ended up repeating the spending mayhem…

So normally this would be a sign of obsessive sole sickness, but actually I’m one of the few that can genuinely say this many trainers in ownership will help me. Yes that’s right, each purchase was necessary, even on a parallel to finding next months rent.
Admittedly when I arrived on the third day, I was handed the previous purchases and told sternly no more, little did they know they already had most of my student loan for the term.
Not just an expensive shopping trip?
The visit was a quest to talk to the store manager about retail and the trainer market. Store managers have a good overview of what is selling and who’s buying it, as well as dealing with customer feedback. They are, in a way on the front line of retail, and have direct contact with the consumer.
This all counts towards primary research.
As a designer you have to look at what’s already been created, and who is buying it.
You need to be aware, so the product can be improved and offer the customer something new.
It’s also an area to draw inspiration. Past, present and if you’ve got the links, future designs allow you to reflect on the fine balance of a great creation and a mighty monster.
A few golden oldies that I can’t take my eyes off
My most recent purchase

Last Thursday as I was shopping for Christmas gifts at Queens Center Mall, I decided to go into Pulse and look at some sneakers. And I came across this beauty. I figured hey its time to spice up my sneaker life with a different color and these stood out to me. I asked for some assistance and luckily they carried big kids sizes for this shoe I tried on a 6.5 they fit fine but then I saw the Price Tag $100.00. I said to myself a hundred dollars for some dunks low tops at that I said no thanks I won't be taking these and left. After I left I kept thinking about this sneaker all week and finally I said to myself there has to be a decent price on these so yesterday I took the Q20 bus down to Jamaica Ave. what a good choice I made. I went right down the block to the Coliseum Mall And walked into one of my favorite sneaker spots, called Sneaker King. They had this shoe and in big kid sizes as well and sold it to me for $75.00. Its always good to know that I can count on Jamaica Ave for some kicks. Pics: http://www.sneakerhead.com/

My favorite sneaker of 2007

Alife, alife, alife. The words play over and over the shoe. If you had told me I’d be loving some sneakers with Alife written all over them, I’da kept my ipod on and kept steppin’. I like Alife, but it just sounds tacky. And fluorescent stripes? Nah, sounds a little too chipper for me.
Female sneaker customizing on TV

I just found this on our girl Fetti's new blog:
"Hey! This week I will be a guest on a rising cable show Urban Wall Street discussing my passion for kicks, customizing, being a female in the sneaker game, and how upcoming customizers can do what I do! If you're in NYC it will air Wednesday 12/20 @ 9:30am, and Thursday 12/21 @ 7am for the early birdies on channel 68! Be sure to check it out then, if not, I will post when it will be on uwsp.com once I get the details! Thanks for the love!"

NB "Factory Plaid" Collection
I can say as a New Englander that the choice of plaid (by designer Andrew Nyssen), is a fun way to tip your hat to all us Nor'easterners who rock our lined plaid jackets and act like it's not cold out! Of course, most of the old skoolers who wore plaid before it came back as trendy are still rocking their old white and navy NBs... but for the rest of us, here goes:

I love the plaid visible through the sole. They're retailing at $150, and the smallest size is a men's 7 (woohoo!)
Supra's Muska Skytops

If these are your kicks-of-choice for your holiday-of-choice, you can find them online at karmaloop.com. You can also check out more Supra styles over at our friends' at Sneaker Freaker...Jordan 8s "The Playoffs"

While there are some special releases for just the ladies on December 22, "The Playoffs" are making a comeback too. Jordan Retro 8s are also known as "The Playoffs." These Jordans will sell out super quickly. Not only because they are super sweet but also because they are selling in a full size run. So all my ladies get there before all the little foot men!!
Retro Jordan 8s

New Jordans for the ladies!! Jordan is FINALLY releasing some Retro 8s in women’s sizes. While they aren’t the best idea in my opinion, we must start somewhere. The 8s will retail for about $110 and can be found at your local Lady Foot Locker on December 22. The leather features a dark cinder, and the bottom is a light pink. Champagne Pink to be exact.
If you missed out....

Roxy Cottontail presents........
Sneaker Design School, The Hand-In
This term consisted of a giant sketchbook, mood-boards, consumer boards and a 3500-word essay on the concept development. This outlines the general footwear market, the trainer market, consumer habits, needs, and concerns. It’s something that you are supposed to be working on throughout the term. Planning for this is essential, there are a lot of area’s to cover, and the work count is rapidly reached. ‘a picture can say a thousand words’ is a comment regularly made by tutor’s, so the finished report has charts, tables, and images.

Presentation and organisation is key for all work, which is hard if you’re known as ‘eclectic’ or messy.
The concept development is there to sell the idea, and show you have found a gap in the market.
There are market research web sites, like Mintel and Verdict, that you have to find secondary research about consumers, lifestyle, shopping habits and predictions for the markets future. It is the written version of your sales pitch, if you’re not there to explain can your work speak for itself?
Sounds long, but this helps to organise your ideas, and give direction to the project.
It’ so easy to get carried away with research, the overspill of my research litters my bedroom floor,

^some of what I couldn’t fit in my sketchbook.
Once you’ve given all you’ve got, you have a brief recovery to get your sugar levels back up, and then the next day you’re told about the Strategy Report to be handed-in in January.
It’s on a realistic time-scale, there are no holidays in Industry. It lives at a fast paced and it’s raw.
All the work paid off, and I attained a first.
Work hard, party hard!

Super Sk8-Hi in Paint Drip Slip By Vans

Today i stumbled upon some Vans. Really stylish and versatile. They are called The Super Sk8-Hi in Paint Drip Slip. Right now i am in contact with Vans to locate more place to purchase and additions sizing. As soon as i have more information so will you! Sizes 9, 9.5 and 10 can be purchase from www.karmaloop.com
Sneaker Design School, An Introduction
I had to study for two years at college before I could apply for a footwear design course at Cordwainers, London College of Fashion. I am currently the only one on my course specifically gearing their project to Sneakers.
Designing, where do you start?
A fat ass sketch book that documents EVERYTHING you have seen, found, like, don’t like and anything that may cause a spark of inspiration.

The first two years consisted of several different projects, each lasting one term. The final year project isn’t for the faint hearted, it lasts for 9 months, so you have to eat, sleep and sh*t your chosen area of the market. The end product (sneaker) has to be fully justified in the current footwear market. 99% preparation is needed for a well executed project.
Mine starts with many adventures all over London and primarily the launch party of the 10th issue of Sneaker Freaker. If it wasn’t for that and the free goody bag(s) I got then my project may have taken a different direction. There were loads of leads in the magazine, including this site.
The focus for this project is going to be on trainers for girls. It’s clear from research that there are a lot of girls with fresh kicks that aren’t being valued in the Sneaker Market. It’s also easier to spend 9 months on something you love, than something that vaguely entertains you.
The last few weeks have been spent with my head down looking for cool kicks to photograph, interviewing as many fiends as I can find, as many store managers that will spare some time and tracking down designers already working for sports companies to get inside info.

^A few pages of fiends from my sketchbook.
This part, talking to everyone, especially consumers is very important. The end sneaker needs to be viable for the market place.
At this stage you end up with a mad amount of cut outs from books, magazines and photos. You have to look at what’s going on in the design industry, including what competitors are doing, new technology and materials. There is a lot of cutting and sticking at this point of the project, you have to get your step on before papers get lost/misplaced.
Not all of the design process is hanging out, trainer spotting. All research has to be taken to tutorials, where I pitch my idea to my tutor and show all my sketchbook work. And my tutor is hard-core. She’s ready to play devils advocate at every corner. It’s a good insight in to Industry. Turns out you can’t just do what you feel, it’s got to be justified and who ever you’re pitching to is always ready to pick holes in it.
Then there’s shopping, shopping is- research! I have visited every sneaker hot-spot in London, looking at product range, sizing, brands etc. Of course this leads to purchase’s. This is one of the better things about being a trainer designer, no one can cuss you for your purchases, or amount of purchases, if anything you turn in to a personal shopper for family and friends. Basically it becomes ok to have your own mini-museum.

new bloggers on FSF!
I wanted to introduce some new faces on the FSF blog. First a belated welcome to $a-money$, who is holding it down for the nyc sneaker and event scene. She first caught our eye when she hauled it over to Brooklyn, solo, for our 2nd birthday party. Since then she's been reppin' us at parties all over New York, as well as taking the time to tell us about them on the blog. She's helping to fill the big shoes of our blog founder, Shanan, who is busy getting famous as an artist and designer in the real world!
Next up is Louise, aka "sneaker design school gal". She's got a special role with us, since she's in design school specializing in designing kicks, or "trainers" as they say over in London. She'll be treating the blog as her journal, sharing with all of us what it takes to design trainers.
Finally we have a new sneaker specialist, Roc, who'll be getting on board to make sure we have the latest updates on the hottest sneaks coming your way. She's also snooping around to keep the word out about what sizes they're coming out in, so you don't have to sleep outside in the cold for a pair and then get told they only go down to a size big enough for both your feet together!
I'm really excited to have all 3 on board. We're aiming to diversify our content, and still striving to keep up to the vision that Shanan started with this blog. Let us know how we're doing!
